What is jaw pain?

Jaw or facial pain can be quite tough to deal with. In some cases, the pain gets so bad that it affects your ability to eat and speak.

Since so many tissues connect at or near the jaw, pain in this area can be indicative of a lot of different things. The sinuses, ears, teeth or other organs may be contributing to your jaw pain.

Common causes of jaw pain

If you experience jaw pain or facial pain, you may have an improper bite, or jaws that are positioned incorrectly. Jaw growth is a gradual process and in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that may affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health and appearance.

Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment.

In partnership with your dentist or orthodontist, Mission Oral Surgery can help diagnose and treat what is causing your facial and jaw pain.

Difficulty in the following areas should be evaluated by our oral surgeons:

  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder: Injury or misalignment of the jaw joint(s) that are responsible for hinging the jaw. This is an umbrella term known as TMJ or TMD. Jaw growth is a gradual process and in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates.

  • Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches can often cause pain to radiate down to the jaw.
  • Tooth pain: Infected teeth can lead to pain and swelling in the face and jaw.
  • Sinus problems: Sinus infections can cause inflammation and pressure in the face or jaw.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: Compression of this facial nerve can cause pain or dysfunction of the face.
  • Heart attack: Sometimes, pain in the face or jaw can indicate a heart attack, which is usually coupled with other symptoms.

Jaw and facial pain treatment options

Orthodontics alone can correct bite problems when only the teeth are involved. Orthognathic surgery or jaw surgery may be required for the jaws when repositioning is necessary.

Orthognathic surgery is needed when the top and bottom jaws don’t meet correctly and/or teeth don’t adequately fit within the jaw. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and corrective jaw surgery repositions a misaligned jaw. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.
