What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting occurs to replace or rebuild damaged or missing jawbone material. Major bone grafting sometimes involves harvesting bone from some other part of the patient’s body such as the hip or lateral knee. This is called an Autogenous bone graft. An Allogenic bone graft involves bone harvested from a cadaver, and Xenogenic bone grafts are when non-living bone is taken from a cow.
New technology now enables us to grow bone where it is needed. To substitute for using real bone, synthetic materials are combined with processed bone material (Demineralized Bone Matrix) along with growth factor to create a composite bone graft. As there are several types of bone grafts, your oral surgeon will recommend the most appropriate type for your specific needs.
Who needs a bone graft?
Dentists and oral surgeons sometimes recommend bone grafting for patients who are receiving dental implants. If a portion of the jawbone has deteriorated, it will require grafting in order to be able to support and stabilize an implant. If the patient had a missing tooth, the bone sometimes deteriorates or is reabsorbed over time without that tooth. Bone grafting might be required if there has been trauma to the bone through an injury, gum disease or congenital defects. Or if the patient has had recent tooth extractions, or wear and tear on the jawbone, grafting might be necessary. If your dentist recommends that you have a bone graft, you can be assured that it is because it is crucial for your oral health.
